Open Flower is a nonprofit pioneering the field of flower design, bridging biotechnology, art, and education.
We create original flower-based artworks with social impact while building open scientific tools that make plant genetic design accessible to students, researchers, and creators.
By sharing knowledge, resources, and imagination, Open Flower aims to inspire a new generation to see living organisms not just as subjects of study, but as a creative medium for expression and discovery.

We are a growing team and community of scientists and artists led by a board with a strong background in biotechnology, science communication, and creative directions.

Nick is the founding scientist and artist with a PhD in plant molecular biology and passion for inspiring others about biology.

Sophien is a pioneering plant pathologist with a long record of promoting equitable science as board member of GetGenome.

Nick is the director of The Sainsbury Laboratory whose made significant contributions to understanding fungal plant pathogens.

Christina a synthetic biologist, writer, and artist exploring the possibilities of biotechnology through creative communication

Juan Pablo has an MS from Imperial & MA from RCA. He is a bio-design oriented creative engineer and designer with a passion for flowers.

Pai has a PhD in molecular biology with MA in illustration along with expertise in horticulture and all things crafty.

Niko is the founding editor of Asimov Press and fellow at Asteria with great writing skills and knowledge of all things biotech.
Open Flower recognizes the power of biotechnology and the responsibility it carries. Shaping living systems has real consequences for ecosystems, society, and the future, and we take that seriously.
We are committed to ethical practice, with careful attention to environmental and societal impact. This means asking not just what we can do, but what we should do.
Our goal is to use biotechnology to bring people closer to nature, not further from it. Making living systems more visible, understood, and valued.

Below is the short story about how OpenFlower got started and its vision.
